Loft Conversions FAQs

Q1. Are loft conversions just another trend?

A1. No. It has long been recognised that converting your loft could be the ideal way to gain additional space in your home without the upheaval and expense not to mention the stress of moving.

Q2. What can you use your loft conversion for?

A2. The most common use of course is to create either 1 or 2 bedrooms. You could also decide to have an en-suite shower or bathroom. A loft conversion makes an ideal study or office with more people opting to work from home these days rather than having to face traffic or train delays. Perhaps the additional space could be used as a playroom for the children or somewhere you can escape just to relax and listen to your favourite music or play computer games without interruption. Or the luxury of just having a spare room may appeal.

Q3. Is it possible to convert all lofts?

A3. Since the late 1960s most properties have been constructed using trussed roof design. Some people think that a trussed roof cannot be converted, but this is not the case. The most important rule to remember is that you check there is adequate headroom before considering a loft conversion. The more height the better, but an ideal height is a minimum of 2200mm (7'2") at the highest point of your loft.

Q4. How much will a loft conversion cost?

A4. Good question! Usually to create 1 bedroom in the loft of a modest sized house would cost in the region of £21,000 to £25,000, obviously the cost would increase the larger the house and the more elaborate the accommodation created.

Q5. Will I get my money back if I sell my home?

A5. A loft conversion will most certainly increase the value of your home and in most cases the increase will be higher than the cost of the original conversion.

Q6. How long does it take to install a loft conversion?

A6. This depends on the size of your home, but usually a straightforward conversion will take approximately four weeks on site.
